You know it's very funny the things people can say, do, when they are behind a screen. The Internet has done amazing things. Created jobs, saved and changed lives but with all good things there is a bad side.
The Internet is full of trolls. People who have nothing better to do than to try to bring you down. They don't see their lives getting any better, they don't see any purpose for themselves so they try to stop you. I understand sometimes on certain social media, say Youtube, people upload content that are of poor quality or are even harmful or offensive. In such cases it is understandable to express yourself in the comment section, I mean thats what it's for; feedback. But when you do it to harm another person, then it's wrong. It's trolling.
People online say things they couldn't face to face because the have the power of anonymousity, isn't that cowardice? It shouldn't be like that. Lot's of people get depressed because of comments like "what are you doing? You shouldn't even be alive", wouldn't you? When someone you have never met, that doesn't even know you, tells you you're a waste of space it feels like you've hit rock bottom. Thousands of people commit suicide because of comments dropped by anonymous users.
How can we solve the issue of Internet trolls and save the thousands of people who commit suicide each year? An eight grader, Bay Matthews, asks herself.
"A troll is the common term given to a person who leaves such harmful comments. They ignite fires online sometimes in off topic ways simply to trigger a reader's emotional response for their pure amusement," she says during her Ted talk. "...Online trolls hide behind their screens threatening and degrading people. The victims of these comments often deal with self doubt and even depression because of the negativity" she continues.
"You're a useless waste of space",
"Why are you even alive?",
" Go put a gun to your head, would you?",
"Nobody cares what you think",
"You're just lonely and in need of attention",
" She needs to see a doctor... she needs serious help"
"I can't believe people watch these stupid videos "
"She clearly has a mental condition of some sort"
"fugly"
If someone,a complete stranger, said those things to you how would you feel? No, sincerely think about it. Reflect on it. Angry? Sad? Worthless? Isn't it inhumane to actually try to make someone feel like that? Because of that Bay created a hashtag, #SYD standing for save the youth digitally. When one reads a hateful comment you can add a nice one attaching the tag #SYD encouraging them not to feel any negative emotions. This tag may actually save people's lives.
Constructive criticism is always appreciated. If you have something to say put it out in a way to get your point across without being so... negative.
